What we do

Investment criteria

What we invest in, and on what terms.

The businesses we invest in, the positions we take, how our capital is committed and what we do after investing. If a business falls outside these, we say so early.

Sectors

We stay inside four sectors we can assess ourselves.

  • Industrials & manufacturing
  • Energy services
  • Business services
  • Real assets

Criteria

What a business needs to look like.

Geography

Western Canada first — Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan — and occasionally elsewhere in North America.

Stage

Established businesses. We do not invest in early-stage or pre-revenue companies, or in distressed turnarounds.

Position

Set by how much the owners want to sell. We do not require control to invest.

Commitment size

No fixed minimum. Size is discussed case by case.

Holding period

No fixed exit date. Corvian does not operate a fund with a set term, so timing is discussed with the owners rather than set by a fund calendar.

How capital is committed

Our own capital, on terms agreed in writing first.

Source
Corvian’s own capital. There are no outside fund investors behind the firm.
Terms first
Terms are agreed in writing before any capital is committed.
Timing
Committed at closing, or in agreed stages where the plan calls for it.
Structure
The holding structure, and who holds title to what, is agreed in writing before closing.

After investment

A board role and capital-allocation input. Management runs the business.

Our involvement covers governance and capital decisions, not day-to-day operations.

Board
A board seat or an observer role, as set out in the terms.
Capital allocation
Input on how the business allocates capital.
Support
Help when management asks for it.
Reporting
A reporting schedule agreed in writing at closing.
Operations
Stay with the management team. We do not run the business.

Not a fit

What we do not invest in.

If your situation is on this list, we are not the right investor.

  • Early-stage venture and pre-revenue companies
  • Distressed turnarounds and restructurings
  • Businesses outside industrials and manufacturing, energy services, business services and real assets
  • Public-market activism and short positions
  • Blind-pool funds and commingled vehicles

Does your business fit?

Send a few lines on what it does, where it operates and what you need. We will tell you early if it falls outside these criteria.
